AI video vs stock footage — what each one is actually good at

An honest comparison of AI video and stock footage on specificity, licensing, revision cost and consistency, plus the shots where stock still wins.


Most of these arguments are fought on the wrong ground. People compare a price per clip against a price per license and declare a winner, when what actually decides a real job is whether the shot you need exists at all. Here is the comparison the way a production person would run it — the axes that change the answer, and an honest list of the work where a stock library is still the correct tool.

Specificity is the axis that decides most jobs

A stock library is a catalog of shots that already exist. That is its strength and its ceiling. You can find a woman drinking coffee in a bright kitchen. You cannot find her drinking from your cup, with your packaging on the counter, in your brand's palette, at the angle the storyboard asked for.

Generated video starts from the other end: you describe the shot and it gets rendered. The nearest-match problem disappears, and so does the compromise that follows it — the one where the edit quietly reshapes itself around what the library had.

The practical version on eroq is that your product becomes a reusable reference. Photograph it once, save it as an Element, and every render can be told to include it. Same for a face — a Character carries reference photos so the same person appears across a set.

A prompt that works for this kind of shot reads as one paragraph:

Licensing is a different shape, not simply cheaper

Stock is licensed, and licenses have terms — territory, duration, broadcast versus web, sometimes a cap on impressions. The terms are usually fine, and they are always someone else's terms. A license is also non-exclusive: the same clip can appear in a competitor's ad next quarter, which for a hero shot is a real risk and for a cutaway is nothing at all.

Revision cost is where the money actually is

The point is not that 49 cents is small. It is that a revision has a number at all, which lets you scope revision rounds in a contract instead of absorbing them.

Consistency across a set

One stock clip is easy. Eight that look like they came from the same shoot is a sourcing problem — different cameras, grades, rooms, talent.

Generated sets have the opposite property: consistency is a setting. The director's rack folds film type, era, lens, aperture, palette and lighting into every render, so a look is applied rather than hunted. Characters hold a face, Elements hold a place or object, and the Seedance family honors a seed, so the same prompt and seed reproduces the same take. Where generation loses is within a shot. Fine detail wanders between takes — hands, small text, the exact shape of a logo. Set dressing that must be pixel-identical across eight shots is still easier to shoot once and reuse.

Where stock footage still wins

Not a concession list, a decision list. Use a library when:

  • The shot must be literally true. Your real storefront, your real team, a real event. A generated version of a true thing is a false claim, whatever the intent.
  • You need real, identifiable people. Generating real identifiable people without consent is not allowed on eroq and is a poor idea everywhere else. Model-released stock exists precisely to solve this.
  • The subject is a real place. A recognizable skyline, a named landmark, a particular stadium. Generation gives you a plausible version, not that one.
  • You need a long unbroken take. Clips run from 3 to 30 seconds depending on engine, and your plan caps the length — 10 seconds free, 15 on Hobby, 20 on Creator, 30 on Studio and up. A 45-second continuous shot is filmed, not rendered.
  • The budget is one cutaway. For a single generic b-roll shot in an otherwise finished edit, sourcing beats setting up a render.
