Best Leonardo AI alternatives in 2026 — 7 tools compared

Seven Leonardo AI alternatives compared on price, video, privacy and content policy: eroq, Midjourney, Krea, Ideogram, Adobe Firefly, OpenArt and Playground.

Leonardo is an image-first creator platform — generation, editing and upscaling, with video next to it — paid in tokens, with a free allowance of 150 tokens a day. People who leave usually give one of four reasons: the filter (its API docs say that, like the web app, it blocks some kinds of image generation by default), privacy (private generation is a paid feature, so free creations go to the public feed), token math (free daily tokens expire each day, and the API is a separate pay-as-you-go account billed in dollars), or a project that now needs clips, voices and the same characters in all of them.

We make eroq, so it is on this list; everything said about the others is from their own public pages as of October 2026 — check their site before you decide.

1. eroq — one cast across images, video and voice, uncensored on its own engines

eroq is a studio and an API on one credit wallet. For images it runs eroq's own uncensored image models (Eroq Uncensored, Eroq One, Anima) plus the named image models on /models; Eroq One holds a face from up to ten reference pictures and edits from a plain-language instruction. For video, 16 engines share one prompt box: eroq Motion One and eroq Motion Pro, eroq's own, next to Seedance, Kling, Veo, Hailuo, Runway, Wan and Grok, each priced per second before you render.

The difference from Leonardo is what surrounds the engines. A Character carries an identity sheet, a persona and a voice, and you @mention it in every tool. eroq Replace Pro puts your characters into a clip you already have, keeping its motion, cuts, lip-sync and sound. eroq Voice One and eroq Voice Turbo clone a voice, eroq Music One writes songs, and Cinema cuts scenes into a film.

eroq's own engines are uncensored within a written policy: fiction only; nothing involving minors, no real identifiable people without consent, nothing illegal — every character 18 or older. Private mode works on every account, free included: it keeps no file and no library entry, and replaces the prompt with stars in the usage ledger. Without it, creations stay in your private library until you publish one.

Where it falls short: third-party engines stay moderated upstream by their providers (a refused prompt returns content_blocked and costs nothing). There is no real-time canvas and no model training, and eroq is not a model marketplace. The free start is a one-time welcome, not a daily refill, and Cinema and Replace Pro do not run in Private mode.

Pricing: 50 welcome credits with no card, then packs from $10 for 1,000 credits or plans from $15 a month for 1,800. An image on eroq's own models is 10 credits; five seconds of eroq Motion One, 145. Credits never expire and failed renders refund themselves. Developers get an OpenAI-shaped REST API on the same wallet, an MCP server and a CLI (docs). Point by point: eroq vs Leonardo.

2. Midjourney — when the still image is the product

Midjourney is the name many people measure image quality against. It makes images, edits them with an Edit model that takes reference pictures, and turns one image into a 5-second video. If the look of a single image is everything to you, test it first.

Where it falls short: its docs say it does not provide an API, and its community guidelines prohibit automating the service. Those guidelines keep content to general audiences, in Stealth Mode too — and Stealth Mode, which keeps your images and videos private, comes only with Pro and Mega.

Pricing, as of October 2026: all four plans are paid subscriptions. Basic is $10 a month ($96 a year) with 3.3 hours of fast GPU time; Standard ($30) adds unlimited images in Relax mode; Pro ($60) and Mega ($120) add Stealth Mode. Extra fast time is $4 an hour. See eroq vs Midjourney.

3. Krea — real-time generation and a wide model shelf

Krea calls itself "the world's most powerful creative AI suite" for images, video and 3D. Its signature is real-time generation on a canvas, and its shelf is wide: its own image models next to named ones, video on Veo, Kling, Hailuo, Wan, Runway and Seedance, upscaling up to 22K, LoRA training and a node editor. If you want more models and more knobs than Leonardo, it is the closest in spirit.

Where it falls short: its pricing page says nothing about private generations or content policy, so read their terms if either matters. The free plan has limited access to image and video models, and the commercial license is listed for paid plans.

Pricing, as of October 2026: a free plan of 100 compute units a day, refilled daily; Basic at $9 a month (less billed yearly) for 5,000 units, with larger plans above. One-time compute packs expire after 90 days. See eroq vs Krea.

4. Ideogram — when the image has words in it

Ideogram's pitch is three phrases: "Prompt fidelity. Crystal-clear type. Reliable editing." Ideogram 4.5 suits posters, ads and print-on-demand designs where the lettering must come out right, with editable text layers, small apps such as a background remover, and an API with an MCP server. It also publishes its Ideogram 4 models openly. If you fought Leonardo over legible text, start here — and see our guide to text in AI images.

Where it falls short: it is an image tool first. On the free plan everything you generate is public, accounts created with email and password get no free credits, and monthly credits do not roll over.

Pricing, as of October 2026: free accounts that sign in with Google, Apple or Microsoft get 30 credits a week. Plus is $20 a month ($15 billed yearly) for 2,400 credits and private generation; Pro is $60 for 7,500.

5. Adobe Firefly — commercially safe, inside the Adobe apps

Firefly generates and edits images, video, audio and designs with Adobe's models and partner models from Google, OpenAI, Kling AI, Runway and others, and sends results into Photoshop, Premiere or Adobe Express. Adobe says its Firefly models are trained on licensed and public-domain content and are safe for commercial use, and it attaches Content Credentials. For client work where provenance matters, that is the reason to pick it.

Where it falls short: the commercial-safety promise covers Adobe's own models; for partner models, Adobe leaves it to you to judge the output. Its generative AI guidelines rule out graphic violence and hateful content, among other categories, and prompts and results may be reviewed by automated and manual methods.

Pricing, as of October 2026: a free plan with daily generations across image, video and audio. Standard is $9.99 a month for 2,000 generative credits (up to 20 five-second videos), Pro $19.99 for 4,000, Pro Plus $49.99 for 10,000.

6. OpenArt — an all-in-one studio with characters

OpenArt calls itself an all-in-one AI creation platform that brings characters, stories, brands and worlds to life. It makes video up to 15 seconds in up to 4K, keeps a character's face across outfits and scenes, and offers Director for more control over video, plus an MCP server and a CLI. Of this list, it is the closest to eroq in shape.

Where it falls short: its site lists MCP and a CLI rather than a public REST API, so building a product on it is a different job. Commercial use rights are listed from Plus, not Starter.

Pricing, as of October 2026: a free trial with daily credits and no card. Starter is $14 a month ($13 a seat billed yearly) for 4,000 credits, Plus $34 for 12,000. Its homepage says your creations stay private. See eroq vs OpenArt.

7. Playground — designs more than artworks

Playground now calls itself "the AI design studio for everyone": describe a logo, a T-shirt, a sticker, a poster or a social post, and it fills in the rest, with thousands of templates across 24 categories. If your Leonardo output mostly ended up on merch, it is a quicker route to a finished file.

Where it falls short: it is built around templates and graphic design, not characters or video, and its pricing page does not mention private generation.

Pricing, as of October 2026: a free plan with a capped number of images per rolling window and a royalty-free commercial license; Pro is $15 a month ($12 billed yearly), Pro Plus $45.

How to choose

  • Policy first. If your stories go to dark places, a default filter is an elimination, not a setting. Uncensored generation only exists where no provider moderates upstream — on eroq, its own engines, within the written policy above.
  • Who sees what you make. Free creations are public on Leonardo and Ideogram; Midjourney's Stealth Mode starts at Pro.
  • How "free" works. A daily refill (Leonardo, Krea, Firefly, OpenArt's trial), a weekly one (Ideogram) or a one-time welcome (eroq).
  • Whether credits expire. Leonardo's free tokens expire daily, Ideogram's monthly credits do not roll over, Krea's packs last 90 days, eroq's credits never expire — see credits vs subscriptions.
  • What comes after the image. For clips, voices and the same character in all of them, pick one studio rather than three subscriptions: eroq's image and video tools share one cast and one wallet.
  • An API, if you build. Midjourney has none; Leonardo's is a separate plan billed in dollars; Ideogram, OpenArt and eroq connect to agents over MCP, and eroq's REST API shares the studio's wallet.

FAQ

What is the best free alternative to Leonardo AI?

It depends on how you use a free tier. Krea refills 100 compute units a day and Firefly gives free daily generations; Ideogram gives 30 credits a week to Google, Apple or Microsoft sign-ins, with public images; OpenArt starts with a trial. eroq gives 50 welcome credits once, no card, with Private mode from the first render.

Is there an uncensored alternative to Leonardo AI?

Yes. Leonardo filters by default, in the web app and the API. eroq's own engines — eroq Motion One and eroq Motion Pro for video, Eroq Uncensored, Eroq One and Anima for images — are uncensored within a written policy: fiction only; nothing involving minors, no real identifiable people without consent, nothing illegal. Third-party engines on eroq stay moderated upstream. More in the best uncensored AI image generators.

Which Leonardo alternative keeps my work private?

On eroq, Private mode works on every account: it keeps no file and no library entry, and replaces the prompt with stars in the usage ledger. Ideogram keeps new images private from Plus, Midjourney from Pro with Stealth Mode, and OpenArt says creations stay private. On Leonardo, private generation is a paid feature.

Does Leonardo AI have an API, and which alternatives do?

Leonardo has one, sold separately from its web app plans, pay as you go in dollars. Midjourney says it does not provide one. Ideogram has an API and an MCP server; eroq has an OpenAI-shaped REST API, an MCP server and a CLI on the studio's credits.

Is Leonardo AI still worth it?

If you make images within its policy, a daily free allowance suits you, and public free creations do not bother you, yes. Before switching either way, price a month of your real usage on both sides — eroq's grid is on /pricing.
