> An establishing shot is the wide frame that tells the audience where they are before the scene starts. It is usually the first shot of a sequence and often the only one that shows the whole location.

It does structural work: without it, every close-up that follows floats. One wide frame buys the viewer the geography they need to read the rest of the scene.

It is also the shot type generative engines are most reliably good at, because a wide frame with no near subject has fewer things to get anatomically wrong.
